Floating Silt Curtain
Floating Turbidity Curtain for Concrete Bridge Install
Question on the floating silt curtain: We are a contractor
in Honolulu and interested in buying a floating silt curtain to install on both sides of a concrete bridge we are repairing. The water level is anywhere from 4 - 4.5 feet and the canal has concrete walls roughly
50 feet wide on each side. The bridge is about 200 feet from a sandbar that blocks the canal to the ocean, so there is no current, only some tidal changes of a 1/2 foot.
Answer: Thank you for asking. Different barriers can be used for location depending on the specific type of containment you are looking to achieve. If you are looking for two separate barriers that you can place on either side of the bridge, a good options for your water conditions would be the Type 2 Turbidity Curtain available in medium duty (DOT) and heavy duty.
These barriers are the medium duty option for turbidity control and have been used in several different applications, including both dredging and bridge repair. These curtains will include a top flotation device, bottom ballast chain, and lower skirt. The skirt should extend vertically in your water locations until about one foot from the floor. This spacing provides extra spacing for curtain movement to keep your barrier in top condition during use.

Additional Floating Silt Curtain Options
Depending on what you are looking to contain, there are a couple additional options you
could consider for bridge repair. This would include the following:
- Floating Mats for Secondary Containment: The floating mat is a uniquely designed control system used under bridges and dams during repair. These mats can be anchors to float in certain areas, catching debris, tools, and other contaminants.
- Piling Protectiors: Another common option for bridge repair is a piling protection system. These curtains are designed as mat with a hole in the middle. This allows pilings to fit directly around the piling to contain debris under the bridge or on different sides.

Marine accessories such as anchoring system, tow bridles, etc. can also be ordered.
