Location: Islamorada, Florida Keys
Objective:
Sun Communities, a resort in Islamorada, Florida, was facing an ongoing challenge with sargassum seaweed washing up on its shores. The influx of sargassum not only created an unpleasant odor but also impacted the guest experience, water quality, and overall aesthetics of the resort. Seeking an effective, long-term solution to mitigate the effects of sargassum, the resort partnered with GEI Works to implement a containment strategy.
Solutions:
To address the problem, GEI Works provided 500 feet of PERM Boom, a durable, long-term floating barrier designed to prevent sargassum from reaching the resort’s shoreline. The boom was strategically deployed to divert and contain the seaweed offshore, allowing it to be naturally carried away by currents or collected for removal before it could accumulate along the beachfront.
Project Highlights:
- Strategic Placement: The 500-foot PERM Boom was installed in key areas where sargassum was most problematic, effectively reducing the volume reaching the resort.
- Durable Construction: Designed for long-term use, the boom withstood the dynamic marine conditions of the Florida Keys, providing continuous protection against floating sargassum.
- Improved Guest Experience: By preventing large amounts of sargassum from accumulating onshore, Sun Communities was able to maintain cleaner, more inviting beachfront areas for its guests.
- Environmental Considerations: The boom allowed for natural water flow while effectively redirecting sargassum, minimizing ecological disruption.
Sargassum blooms continue to be a challenge for coastal communities, and solutions like containment booms offer a proactive approach to managing their impact. GEI Works remains committed to helping businesses, homeowners, and municipalities find effective solutions for sargassum control.
